St. Louis Wizards starter Don Sutton struggled through 7 innings, but allowed just 4 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings while striking out 8. Down 4-0 in the 5th inning and facing Houston’s Juan Marichal, things looked grim. But the Wizards gradually came back. It started with two solo home runs by Willie McCovey and Joe Morgan. St. Louis scored again in the 6th, but were still down 4-3 heading into the 8th. Marichal walked Duke Snider to lead off the inning, and Willie Mays followed with a single. Trevor Hoffman came in to hold the lead, retiring Mike Piazza and Stan Musial. With two outs, Larry Walker drilled a triple into the corner that cleared the bases and put the Wizards on top. McCovey followed with his 2nd homer of the game, capping a 4-run inning. Down 7-4 in the 9th, the Hoots threatened a comeback of their own against Rich Gossage. After Tim Raines led off with a single, Gossage got two quick outs. Jeff Bagwell hit one back to the mound that Gossage bobbled. Then, Willie Stargell hit an RBI double to put the tying run in scoring position. Gossage got Rogers Hornsby to ground out to end the game, giving St. Louis a 7-5 win and their 3rd straight win. Just 5 games separate 1st and last place in the National League. McCovey’s two home runs were his 1st two of the season. It was just the 2nd loss of the season for Marichal, who still has a 1.75 ERA despite allowing 5 earned runs.
