Earl Whitehill outdueled Lefty Grove, and Joe Kuhel provided the offense, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Joe Cronin’s error in the 5th lead to an unearned run an inning before Kuhel drove in the 2nd run for Washington. Doc Cramer drove in Bobby Doerr in the 8th before Jack Russell came in in relief to shut the Red Sox down. Rookie Ted Williams was 0 for 4 in his debut. The winner of this 5-game series will advance to play the #1 seed 1939 New York Yankees.
