Gaylord Perry allowed just 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings, striking out 4, and Cal Ripken provided the offense as the Boston Splinters topped the Detroit Rockets 7-2. Perry carried a 2-1 lead into the 5th against David Cone when Harmon Killebrew hit a bases-loaded Sac Fly and Ripken followed with a 2-run double to break things open. Ripken added another RBI in the 8th. Teammate Carlton Fisk also hit his 5th homer of the season. Cone allowed 6 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings in the losing effort. Boston extended their lead in the American League and is now 13-9. Detroit fell to 12-11. Yesterday’s game was rained out and will be made up tomorrow.
