Oakland Jacks slugger George Brett hit a 2-run homer off Robin Roberts in the 2nd inning of the 2022 Baseball Maelstrom All-Star Game, and the American League never looked back. Teammate Hank Greenberg had walked to lead off the inning for the AL. New York Swats ace Nolan Ryan gave up an RBI single to Ryne Sandberg in the 6th, scoring Stan Musial to make it 2-1, but Los Angeles’ Tom Glavine ran into trouble in the 7th. Brett led off the inning with a walk, Ichiro Suzuki followed with a single, and Glavine walked Bill Freehan to load the bases with no outs. Kent Tekulve came in to stop the bleeding, but Joe Gordon hit a single, scoring 2, before Tekulve struck out the next 3 batters to get out of the inning. The National League had runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the inning against Pedro Martinez but couldn’t score. There was drama in the 9th when Satchel Paige walked Ted Simmons with one out. Tom Henke came in to close, but allowed a single to Chuck Klein. Willie Mays flew out to center, but Barry Bonds drew a walk to load the bases, giving Johnny Mize a chance to be the hero for the NL. Instead, Mize grounded out to Dick Allen at 1st to end the game, giving the American League a 4-1 win.
