Wizards starter Robin Roberts continued his May struggles, allowing 5 runs in 7 innings against the Houston Hoots. Roberts allowed just 5 hits, but 3 of those were home runs. Roberto Clemente hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning, and Mike Schmidt and Hank Aaron hit solo shots in the 2nd and 4th. Houston’s Bob Gibson pitched out of several jams to take a shutout into the 8th before the Wizards finally scored 2 runs. Rube Marquard allowed 2 more without retiring a batter in the 9th, both runs from a double by Tony Gwynn, but Lee Smith was perfect to close out the game for his 13th save, giving Houston the 6-4 win. Roberts is now 0-5 in May. Houston has now taken 2 of 3 from the Wizards, improving to 21-24. Meanwhile, St. Louis dropped to 29-16, giving the Los Angeles Dynamos a small 4 1/2 game window to catch up in the National League.
