The Pittsburgh Pirates offense had its way with Milwaukee pitching, scoring in all but 3 innings on their way to an 8-5 win to advance in the Baseball Maelstrom Tournament. Brewers starter Mike Caldwell had the shortest outing of a pitcher this year, lasting just 4 1/3 innings after allowing 4 hits in the 5th, including back-to-back RBI singles to Dave Parker and Pie Traynor, to allow the Pirates to extend their lead to 5-1. Babe Adams pitched well for Pittsburgh. Milwaukee threatened in the 6th, scoring twice and loading the bases, but Adams struck out Don Money to end the inning. The Pirates scored 3 more runs off Dan Plesac in the 7th to extend their lead. Roy Face made things interesting in the 9th, allowing 2 Milwaukee runs and loading the bases. Goose Gossage walked Prince Fielder to cut the Pirate lead to 8-5, but Robin Yount flew out, stranding the tying runs. Honus Wagner was the only Pirate without a hit, and 7 of the 9 starters had an RBI. Ralph Kiner and Brian Giles hit solo shots.
