Detroit Comeback Tops New York 5-3

Two solo home runs and a wild pitch put the New York Swats on top of Roger Clemens and the Detroit Rockets 3-0 into the 5th, but the Rockets came back. Ty Cobb led off the game with the 1st solo home run. Babe Ruth tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the 4th, and Roberto Alomar hit a solo shot in the 5th. Clemens allowed just 5 hits in 7 innings of work. Mike Mussina took a shutout into the bottom of the 5th when Mark McGwire hit a solo homer. Dwight Evens led off the 6th with a single off Mussina, and three doubles, capped by Bobby Veach, put Detroit on top 4-3. Veach added an insurance run in the 8th off reliever Bullet Rogan. John Hiller picked up only his 2nd save of the season, holding New York scoreless in the 9th after a leadoff double by Joe Mauer. Despite the loss, New York is still a game above .500.
