Boston Splinters Win 6th Straight in Rain-Shortened 1st Home Game

Frank Thomas was 4 for 4 with 3 RBI, but it was Al Kaline who broke a close game open in the 6th inning with a 3-run homer, chasing Oakland Jacks’ starter Whitey Ford and setting the Splinters up for their 6th straight win. Neither Ford or Boston starter Lefty Grove were sharp, as the teams traded runs through the first 5 innings. Whitey Ford had a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 6th and retired the first two batters before Cal Ripken tied the game with his 1st homerun of the season. It was the first of 5 2-out runs for Boston, capped with Kaline’s blast that put the Splinters up 10-5. Red Ruffing had retired the first two Oakland batters in the 8th when heavy rain and lightning forced a delay. With no end in sight, the game was eventually called. Boston improves to 7-2 after their 1st home game, while Oakland falls to 4-5.
