Wizards Stun Docs, Walkoff for Best Maelstrom Record

St. Louis’ Rogers Hornsby hit a walk-off single off Chicago’s Billy Wagner to help the Wizards overcome a 5-0 deficit and improve their record to 8-1. Chicago’s Rick Reuschel had a 5-hit shutout in the 8th inning before Andre Dawson and Hornsby hit back-to-back homers to cut the Docs’ lead to 5-4. Dawson had entered the game when Oscar Charleston and Ozzie Smith collided on a shallow flyball to center in the 4th inning. Charleston left the game for x-rays. Wagner entered in the 9th having not allowed a run, and only two baserunners in 4 innings of relief work this season. Ron Santo and Ozzie Smith hit singles to lead off the inning. Ted Simmons then walked to load the bases. Wagner then walked Tony Gwynn to tie the game. Dawson grounded into a home-to-first double-play, but Hornsby followed with his single to give the Wizards a stunning win. St. Louis overcame hitting into 4 double-plays.
