Wizards Keep on Rolling, Improve to 9-1

One day after needing extra-inning heroics, the St. Louis Wizards wasted no time in taking the lead. Rogers Hornsby hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning and the Wizards never looked back, beating the Chicago Docs 6-2. John Smoltz pitched 7 solid innings, allowing just 1 run for his first win of the season. The Docs threatened in the 3rd, but Oscar Charleston showed off his arm, gunning down Pete Rose at the plate on a potential sac fly. Orel Hershiser picked up the loss for the Docs. Ted Simmons has been hot in the number 9 spot. He was 4 for 4 to improve his average to .458. St. Louis improved to 9-1, while Chicago dropped to 4-6.
