Hubbell became the first pitcher to win 4 games, allowing just 1 run and 5 hits over 8 innings while striking out 10. Hubbell also improved his Maelstrom-leading ERA to 1.71. Chicago’s Orel Hershiser picked up the tough loss. Hershiser allowed just 2 runs in 8 innings. Rogers Hornsby broke a 1-1 tie in the 8th with a go-ahead RBI double. In the 9th, with Kent Tekulve on the mound, Jimmie Rollins bobbled a double-play ball, leading to another double by Hornsby that cleared the bases and extended the Wizard’s lead. Hornsby ended 3 for 5 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI to bring his average up to .200. The loss drops Chicago to 7-12.
