Detroit’s Roger Clemens retired the first 9 batters he faced, but a 2-out rally in the 6th undid his great pitching. George Brett and Joe DiMaggio hit back-to-back singles before Mickey Cochrane hit a bases-clearing double to put Oakland in the lead. Tris Speaker followed with another double to add an insurance run. Cochrane was feeling right at home in Detroit, going 3 for 4. Jim Kaat allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings to pick up his 2nd win in as many starts after starting the season in the bullpen. The 4-3 victory gives Oakland back-to-back wins and improves their record to 18-22. Detroit is now 23-18. They have just a 1-game lead over Boston in the American League.
