Marlins Almost Blow It, Take Down Giants

Miami starter Kevin Brown held the San Francisco Giants to just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 10 in 8 innings to become the 2nd 16-seed of the day to advance in the Baseball Maelstrom Tournament. Carlos Delgado was 3 for 5 with a home run, driving in 3 runs against Christy Mathewson. Miami’s bullpen nearly blew it in the 9th. A.J. Ramos allowed back-to-back homers to Barry Bonds and Willie McCovey, and another to Kevin Mitchell to cut the Marlin lead to 6-5. Armando Benítez walked the first two batters he faced before getting Roger Bresnahan to ground out and striking out Jeff Kent to end the game. The top-seeded New York Yankees lost earlier today to the Seattle Mariners.
