Kevin Appier took a 2-hit shutout into the 9th, and the Kansas City Royals did just enough against Wilbur Wood, outdueling the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 win and advancing in the Baseball Maelstrom Tournament. Amos Otis broke a scoreless tie in the 7th, hitting an RBI single off Wood. Mike Sweeney added an important insurance run with a solo home run in the 9th off Dámaso Marté. Appier was one out away from a shutout when Dick Allen hit a solo shot. Greg Holland retired Carl Reynolds to pick up his 2nd save, sending the White Sox home. Wood allowed just 5 hits and a run in 8 innings, but still picked up the loss. The Royals advance to play the Yankees tomorrow.
