Carl Hubbell overcame a rough 1st inning, topping the Los Angeles Dynamos in a close game to pick up his 7th win of the season. Stan Musial got the St. Louis Wizards on the board early, hitting a 2-run homer off Don Sutton in the 1st inning. It was Musial’s Maelstrom leading 13th home run. Hubbell allowed 2 hits and 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st. After a 3rd strike got away from Johnny Bench to allow Tony Pérez to reach 1st and extend the inning, Hubbell walked the next two batters, including one with the bases loaded. Oscar Charleston gunned down Pérez at the plate, tagging up on a flyout to end the inning. But Hubbell kept LA scoreless after that, exiting after 7 innings. Larry Walker hit an RBI single in the 5th to tie the game, and Tony Gwynn hit another in the 7th to put St. Louis ahead 4-3. LA’s WIllie Mays led off the 9th with a single against Wizards closer, Bruce Sutter. Pérez singled to put the tying run in scoring position, but pinch hitters Cristóbal Torriente and Ernie Lombardi grounded out to end the game. Sutter picked up his 11th save and the Wizards improved to 27-13, increasing their lead over LA by 4 games with 2 remaining in the series.
