Beltré Bobble Brings Boston Sweep
Adrián Beltré’s rare error prolonged the 8th inning and allowed the Boston Splinters to pull ahead of the Detroit Rockets for a 3-2 victory and a series sweep. Detroit’s Frank Tanana had a 2-hit shutout going into the 8th, when Bobby Doerr doubled to lead off the inning. Cal Ripken singled to put runners on the corners. Ted Williams hit a shallow fly to left that failed to score Doerr, but Mickey Mantle hit a bases-clearing 2-out double to tie the game. Beltré couldn’t get a handle on a slow roller from Frank Thomas, and Al Kaline made the Rockets pay, singling home Mantle for the go-ahead run. Meanwhile, Jim Palmer scattered 6 hits for Boston, striking out 9 in 7 innings, allowing just 2 runs. Pedro Martínez and Rollie Fingers pitched a perfect 8th and 9th in relief, with Fingers picking up his 1st save of the season. Boston improves to 6-2, while the Rockets fall to 4-4.
