Oakland Polo Grounds Hit Parade Continues, Newhouser Latest Victim
Just a day after scoring 12 runs against Red Faber and the New York Swats, Oakland set a new single-game record for the season, topping the Swats 18-4. New York’s Hal Newhouser was the latest victim, as Oakland’s bats continued to be hot. Newhouser didn’t allow a homer and induced inning-ending double plays in three straight innings, but still allowed 8 runs in his 5 innings of work. Walter Johnson relieved Newhouser and gave up back-to-back homers to George Brett and Rod Carew. Early Wynn allowed a Goose Goslin grand slam in the next inning. Meanwhile, Oakland’s Mike Mussina had just one rough inning, allowing 5 of his 6 hits and all 4 runs in the 3rd inning, capped by a Stan Musial homerun. Oakland’s Rod Carew was 3 for 4 with 2 walks in the leadoff spot and was just a single shy of a cycle. The Jack’s Mickey Cochrane needed just a homerun for a cycle of his own.
