Swats Hold Off Rockets in Wild Win
Jimmie Foxx had a triple and a homerun and drove in 4 runs as the New York Swats beat the Detroit Rockets 11-7 in a wild win at the Polo Grounds. Yogi Berra was ejected for arguing a questionable ball four call in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd, Harry Heilmann hit a slow roller to first base, colliding with Dick Allen. Both players had to exit the game for evaluation. Starters David Cone and Bob Lemon combined for 13 walks, and Lemon hit two batters in the game. Despite that, Lemon pitched into the 8th with an 11-4 lead. After allowing 3 more runs to cut his lead to 11-7, Waite Hoyt stopped the Rockets, improving New York’s record to 3-6. The Rockets fell to 4-5. Lou Whitaker was 2 for 3 with a walk in the losing effort.
