Recap

Rockets Take Control Late, but Swats Walk it Off in Extras

The Detroit Rockets Dick Allen was 3 for 4 with a HR, 3 RBI, and scored the go-ahead run in the 11th, but Tom Henke couldn’t find the strike zone as New York won 6-5. Starters Dave Stieb and Stan Coveleski both allowed 4 runs, turning it over to the bullpen as the teams struggled for baserunners into extra innings. Bill Freehan singled home Allen in the 11th off the Swats’ Walter Johnson. The Rockets had three innings of 1-hit ball from Dan Quisenberry before turning it over to closer Henke. Henke walked Roberto Alomar to start the inning. Yogi Berra grounded into a force out, but Wade Boggs followed with a double, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Henke intentionally walked contact-hitter Cobb in hopes of getting Ruth to strikeout or ground into a double play, but he continued to struggle with his control. Ruth walked to tie the game. Jimmie Foxx followed and battled the count himself before Henke missed just outside to walk in the winning run. Both teams are now 4-6.
