Harold Baines hit two home runs, doubling his season total, and the Chicago Docs feasted on Dave Stieb and Urban Shocker, topping the Detroit Rockets 11-6 in the final game of the regular season. Even so, the game was close until Shocker allowed another 5 runs in the 8th. Baines finished 3 for 4 with 4 RBI. Bob Lemon wasn’t great for the Docs, but did well enough to improve to 3-6. Lemon allowed 5 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings. The Swats finish the season a disappointing 23-31. The Rockets now head to the World Series.

Álex Rodríguez led the Detroit offense, going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI. Just two days after a 2-homer game, Rodríguez became the first player this season to hit 3 home runs in a game. All were solo shots. He now leads the American League with 16. New York did not go quietly, as they also batted around in the 6th inning, scoring 8 runs total against Frank Tanana. 6 of those runs came in the 6th. Harry Heilmann, Berra, and Paul Molitor all had 4 hits for the Swats. Charlie Blackwell was 4 for 4 for the Rockets. The Los Angeles Dynamos and Houston Hoots traded home runs. LA came out on top, holding on for a 6-5 win. Houston starter Randy Johnson allowed a 2-run homer to Johnny Bench in the 2nd. Houston responded with a 3-run shot from Hank Aaron against Tom Glavine in the 3rd. Gary Carter added a solo homer to put them up 4-2. But Mike Schmidt misplayed a ball with 2-outs in the 6th to load the bases, and Jackie Robinson hit a grand slam to give the Dynamos a 6-4 lead. The Hoots would add another run to cut the lead, but Jim Bunning pitched a scoreless 8th, and Goose Gossage pitched a scoreless 9th for his 12th save. Johnson finishes the season 5-3 with a 5.38. The win ensures LA of a 2nd-place finish in the National League.
Reggie Jacks Boston, Oakland a Game Away from Series Sweep
While it’s been a disappointing year for the Oakland Jacks and Reggie Jackson, they topped the Boston Splinters 5-2 and are a game away from a 4-game series sweep to end the season. Mike Mussina allowed just 2 runs in 7 innings, and Jackson hit his 10th home run of the season, a 3-run shot in the 5th off Boston tough-luck starter Pedro Martínez. He failed to live up to the team’s expectations for him this season. Joe DiMaggio led the Oakland offense going 2 for 4 with a home run. The Jacks scored 5 runs against Lefty Gomez, 3 of them earned, to give Boston their 3rd straight loss. Ted Williams was 1 for 3, lowering his batting average to .340. The teams have two games left in the season.
Carlton Drops Docs, 2nd Straight Shutout
The St. Louis Wizards look ready for the World Series. Steve Carlton allowed 7 hits while striking out 11, shutting out the Chicago Docs for the Wizards’ 35th win. It was not only Carlton’s 2nd straight shutout but the 2nd time this season he’s held teams scoreless in back-to-back starts. Meanwhile, the Wizards’ offense destroyed Curt Schilling in his final start of the season. Schilling allowed 11 runs on 16 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Willie McCovey was 3 for 5 with a homer and 5 RBI. Oscar Charleston and Larry Walker also homered. Schilling ends the season 4-5 with a 7.16 ERA and leads the Maelstrom in home runs allowed with 23. New York Tops Detroit Again, Hand St. Louis Home-field Advantage in the World Series
For the 2nd straight game, the last-place New York Swats kept the Detroit Rockets offense off-balance. This time, it was a battle of the two winningest pitchers in the American League. Hal Newhouser came out on top of Bret Saberhagen, allowing just one run on 8 hits in 8 innings to finish the regular season 9-2. Saberhagen had won his last 8 starts but allowed 6 earned runs on 11 hits in this one to fall to 9-3. Babe Ruth started things off for the Swats with a 3-run homer in the 1st inning, and the New York offense never looked back, topping Detroit 7-1. After the Boston Splinters lost to send the Rockets to the World Series, Detroit has lost 2 straight, giving St. Louis home-field advantage in the postseason. They’ll look to turn things around in the final 2 games of the series before the World Series.
Walker’s 4 RBI Lead Wizards Over Docs
Larry Walker was 3 for 5 with 3 singles to lead the St. Louis Wizards over the Chicago Docs. Walker drove in one run in the 1st and 2 more in the 2nd. He finished with 4 RBI.
