But the Los Angeles Dynamos took advantage of sloppy play to score 4 runs in the bottom of the inning. Robin Roberts allowed 7 runs to LA in his 5 innings and the Dynamos went on to win it 9-5. Dynamos starter Pete Alexander improved to 3-0, despite allowing 5 runs in 8 innings. LA’s Chuck Klein led the offense, going 2 for 4 with a double, a homer, and 3 RBI. LA needed the win after dropping the first two games to the Wizards at home. They are 3 games back in the National League.

Ripken Caps Big Game with Walk-Off
New York Swats closer Satchel Paige blew a 3-2 lead in the 9th, as Cal Ripken Jr. hit a 3-run walk-off homer to give the Boston Splinters a 5-3 win. Wade Boggs and Jim Rice hit solo shots in the 1st off Boston starter Lefty Gomez, but Ripken responded in the next inning with a 2-run blast of his own to tie the score. Boggs hit an RBI double in the 5th to put the Swats back on top. That’s where things stood until the 9th. Paige allowed a leadoff double to Frank Thomas. Lou Gehrig hit a sharp grounder to Alan Trammell, who couldn’t come up with it, putting runners on the corners with no outs. That’s when Ripken hit one deep to left to win it for Boston. Houston’s Burleigh Grimes allowed 6 hits and walked 2 in the 2nd inning, capped by Albert Pujols 3-run double. Pujols finished 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. Bobby Bonds was also 3 for 5. Houston was hitless until Ryne Sandberg hit a double in the gap in the 7th inning, ruining Gooden’s no-hitter and his shutout, driving in Duke Snider who had walked to lead off the inning. Gooden allowed 3 hits and 3 runs, 2 of them earned, while striking out 8 in 8 innings. Houston dropped to 18-23 with the loss, as Chicago improved to 13-28.
Two-Out Rally Leads Jacks Over Rockets
Detroit’s Roger Clemens retired the first 9 batters he faced, but a 2-out rally in the 6th undid his great pitching. Tris Speaker followed with another double to add an insurance run. Cochrane was feeling right at home in Detroit, going 3 for 4. Jim Kaat allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings to pick up his 2nd win in as many starts after starting the season in the bullpen. Docs End Losing Streak, Still Eliminated from Playoffs
Because of a St. Louis Wizards win today, the Chicago Docs were likely eliminated from post-season contention. Houston starter Bob Gibson took a shutout into the 8th when Albert Pujols hit a bases-loaded triple to tie the game. Jackson’s Two Homers Lead Oakland Over Detroit

But today was a bright spot as Mr. October went 2 for 3 with 2 homers and 5 RBI to lead the Jacks in a 9-4 win over the league-leading Detroit Rockets. Jackson capped a 4-run 4th inning with a 3-run homer off Detroit starter David Cone. He hit another in the 8th, a 2-run shot off Urban Shocker. Oakland starter Jack Morris allowed 3 runs in 7 innings while striking out 6 to earn his 1st win of the season. Oakland is now 17-22, while the loss drops Detroit to 23-17. Hubbell allowed 2 hits and 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st. After a 3rd strike got away from Johnny Bench to allow Tony Pérez to reach 1st and extend the inning, Hubbell walked the next two batters, including one with the bases loaded. Oscar Charleston gunned down Pérez at the plate, tagging up on a flyout to end the inning. But Hubbell kept LA scoreless after that, exiting after 7 innings. Larry Walker hit an RBI single in the 5th to tie the game, and Tony Gwynn hit another in the 7th to put St. Louis ahead 4-3. LA’s WIllie Mays led off the 9th with a single against Wizards closer, Bruce Sutter. Pérez singled to put the tying run in scoring position, but pinch hitters Cristóbal Torriente and Ernie Lombardi grounded out to end the game. Nolan Ryan allowed just 4 hits, 3 of them to Rickey Henderson, but walked 9 Boston Splinters. Even so, the New York Swats still won 3-2. Swats hitters took full advantage of some timely base hits to score 3 runs early off Gaylord Perry. Henderson drove in both Boston RBI. New York’s Satchel Paige pitched a perfect 9th for his 7th save this season. The loss broke Boston’s 3-game winning streak, dropping them to 21-17. The Swats are 17-22.
